UK News: Alabama 3 play Brixton Benefit Party at Jamm

2012-01-26 01:06:37

On Friday 27 and Saturday 28 January, Jamm will be alive with some of the UK’s favourite artists. All will give their time to raise money for the Triangle, one of London’s oldest adventure playgrounds and a haven for local children. Run over two nights, this amazing event is the brainchild of Brixton band Alabama 3 and Jamm director Jonathan Allen. 100% of the money raised will go to the Triangle Adventure Playground Association, the local charity – run entirely by volunteers – that keeps the playground open.

As well as Alabama 3, artists confirmed to date include Basement Jaxx, Freestylers, Mz Bratt, Stereo  MCs, Rodney P, Spiritual South, Congo Natty (aka Rebel MC), Tenor Fly, Dubpistols, Adamski, The Correspondents, The Thirst and many more.

None other than the amazing Howard Marks will be performing 2 hours of his critically acclaimed live show and there will be giveaways from Dot Rotten. Most of the artists are local or London based so understand very well just how important managed and staffed playgrounds like the Triangle are for the kids of local communities.

In recent years many battles have been fought to keep the playgroun functioning five days a week during both term times and school holidays. Outdoor it offers playspace with giant swings, a zip line and climbing tower while its cabin offers space for art-based activities and socialising. As the only permanent young people’s organisation working in an inner-city area increasingly notorious for lethal gang crime, the Triangle provides a safe haven for young people who would otherwise be hanging out on the street. Its importance to the community can be judged by the fact that it currently has an active membership register of over 750 names.

In the present financial climate the Triangle has been forced to cut its opening hours. To keep it functioning fully, its management committee need to raise over £100,000 every year. Never has there been a more enjoyable way to do some good in the community. Having the chance to witness some of London and the UK's most celebrated artists and knowing that you are supporting a London based charitable association that works towards a better future for some many young people is really something to be proud of.

Everyone that is giving their time free of charge over two nights of events, including the artists, Jamm and the Triangle Adventure Playground Association, are striving for the same goal - sell out events to raise as much as possible. With the support of the media and London public, this is a goal we hope to see come to fruition.
